When Kane and I were home a couple weekends ago we scheduled our first premarital session with our Pastor. I will admit I was a little nervous as Kane and I both tend to be ones who do not openly share details about our relationship with others. Thankfully our Pastor put us at ease and I found the whole experience very refreshing. We talked a lot about how our relationship started, our first date almost four years ago, and it was fun to take a walk down memory lane. Of course Kane and I both experienced this together, but it was interesting to hear the milestones in our relationship from his point of view. We also talked about what we saw in our future, and were reminded how important it is to be open and honest with your partner with what you want out of life/your marriage.
I personally pride myself on my communication skills, but I realized how easy it is to overlook the importance of this when you have been in a relationship for a while. Having open and honest communication are two important aspects we discussed extensively. Our Pastor only requires one meeting before our wedding date, but Kane and I have both agreed we are going to try and make time for another visit. We were able to get so much out of our first meeting it would be nice to be able to talk more about how family dynamics, financial issues, and everyday life fit into our relationship as we prepare to take it to the next level.
Another huge relief was we were able to get almost all our ceremony details sorted out during our meeting. We have set our official time (which makes the whole thing even more unbelievably real!) and now I am able to start working on wedding invitations. I have decided to do more of a DIY invite rather than ordering them. I cannot wait to share more on these as they get closer to completion!
How many sessions of premarital counseling are you required to attend? Did you get a lot out of it?
